LANDINO, FRANCESCO. - Musician, also called Franciscus de Florentia, Magister Franciscus, or the blind man of the organs. Born in Florence in 1325 and died there on 2 September 1397, buried in S. Lorenzo. Despite the blindness that struck him at a very young age, he became the most accomplished and famous organist of his age.
He was organist at S. Lorenzo, an expert player of various instruments (to a keyboard instrument invented by him he gave the name "siren of sirens"), and he composed vocal music of fresh and graceful inspiration and of free melodic and harmonic manner. Summoned in 1364 to Venice for the festivities in honor of the king of Cyprus, he was crowned with laurel by the latter. He is considered one of the major exponents of the Florentine ore novo.
He composed numerous madrigals, ballate, and songs for up to 3 voices, for the most part still in manuscript. Some compositions appear, in modern notation, in collections by Romagnoli, Riemann, etc.
