LANDINO, CRISTOFORO. - Born at Pratovecchio in 1424, died at Florence in 1498. He did his early studies at Volterra, and was later a teacher in the Florentine Studio, secretary of the Guelph party, chancellor of the signoria.
A distinguished humanist, he held an eminent place among the Latin poets of the 15th century, marking with the canzoniere Xandra the transition from the rough forms of Marsuppini to the exquisite elegances of Poliziano. He shows himself a pleasing expositor in the four days of the Disputaciones Camaldulenses, in which, reconciling the theories of the classics with Christianity, by means of arguments drawn from Cicero, St. Augustine, St. Thomas and from Ficino (who is one of the interlocutors together with Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici, Donato Acciaiuoli, L. Battista Alberti and others) he discusses the active and the contemplative life, the supreme good, God, in whom resides the supreme happiness of man. In the De vera nobilitate the humanistic concept that derives nobility from works is given shade; while the dialogues De nobilitate animae link up with Ficinian theories, maintaining, against the Averroists, the divine nobility of the human soul. A great impulse to Dante studies was given by L.'s commentary on the Commedia, which came to light in 1481, illustrated by Botticelli.
