MEDICI, LORENZO de', called LORENZINO. - B. in Florence on 23 March 1514, d. in Venice on 26 Feb. 1548. He is the tyrannicide, the killer of his cousin
Alessandro (night of 5-6 Jan. 1537) whose companion in vices and procurer in love he had, perhaps by design, been. A fugitive in Bologna, and, after the defeat of Montemurlo, in Turkey, in France, he finally came to Venice, where he was reached by the hired assassins of Cosimo I. The Rime are cold and artificial, but the comedy Aridosia is well constructed (although it derives from Plautus and Terence), with striking characters and incisive action. The Apologia is vigorous and meditated, in which he defends his own conduct with examples from antiquity: a prose full of vigor, among the most famous in our literature.
