LEO, LEONARDO. - Musician, born at S. Vito degli Schiavi (dei Normanni) on 5 Aug. 1694, died at Naples on 31 Oct. 1744. He studied at the Conservatory of La Pietà, where in 1712 he was appointed “mastricello”; in 1739 he succeeded Feo as teacher at the Conservatory of S. Onofrio, while continuing his teaching at La Pietà. Among his pupils were Piccinni and Jommelli. He served as organist at the Royal Chapel and at the Cathedral.
As a composer, he wrote about 80 operas which placed him among the leading figures of the Neapolitan school.
