LEODEGARIUS (Léger), Bishop of Autun, Saint. - Of Frankish nobility, b. around 616, d. near Arras on 3 Oct. 679. He was educated at the court of Chlothar III, then in the household of his uncle Dido, bishop of Poitiers, who ordained him deacon (636), made him archdeacon of Poitiers (ca. 653) and entrusted to him, with the title of abbot, the monastery of St-Maixent in Poitou. Summoned to court (656), he was a counsellor of St. Bathilde, regent during the minority of Chlothar III. Bishop of Autun in 663, he gathered in his episcopal city a council that dealt in particular with monastic discipline (670).
Devoted to the poor, he founded at Autun the "Matricula," a charitable institution which he endowed with his own property. On the death of Chlothar III (673), he contributed effectively to the election of Childeric II of Austrasia to the throne of Neustria, against the mayor of the palace Ebroin. A counsellor of Childeric, in 675 he fell into disgrace following slanderous accusations and was exiled to Luxeuil. Having returned to Autun after the assassination of Childeric (Sept. 675), soon besieged by Ebroin's troops, he wished to spare his people and gave himself up to the enemy (676). They burned out his eyes with red-hot iron, and cut out his tongue and lips. Condemned by a synod at Ebroin's orders, he died decapitated in the forest of Sarcing, near Arras. His remains were transferred in 681 to the monastery of St-Maixent. He is honoured as a martyr. His cult spread in France and in Belgium. Feast on 2 Oct.
