LÓPEZ de AYALA, PEDRO. - Spanish writer and statesman, b. at Vitoria in 1332, d. at Calahorra in the early days of April 1407. Chancellor of Castile and a warrior, he was also, chronologically, the first of the Hispanists of Spain. He conferred literary dignity upon the chronicle, until then monotonous and neglected, and in his entire oeuvre, informed by moralizing intent, he reflected the probity of his spirit and his love of culture.
A broad section of the Rimado de Palacio, in " cuadernu via ", partly conceived in the prison of Oviedo after the disaster of Aljubarrota (1386) and inspired by a pessimistic vision of society, whose deviations L. satirizes with sorrow, contains lyrics on sacred subjects: notable are the canticles to the Virgin of Guadalupe and of Montserrat and the vast ethical-religious epilogue derived in large part from the Old Testament. Even in the Libro de ceteria o de las aves de caza the excursus morali are frequent. More valuable, literarily, are the Crónicas, a dark and anguished exposition of Spanish events from 1350 to 1406, substantially set in the medieval spirit, but enlivened, at times, by the reflections of Italian pre-humanism: Mérimée drew upon it for the reconstruction of the history of Peter I of Castile. He also translated from Livy, Boethius, St. Gregory the Great, St. Isidore, Guido delle Colonne (Historia troiana), Boccaccio (De casibus virorum illustrium).
