MALLINCKRODT, PAULINE von. - Foundress of the Sisters of Christian Charity, born at Minden (Westphalia) on 3 June 1817, died at Paderborn on 30 April 1881.
Director in Paderborn of a nursery school and an institute for blind children, being unable to entrust the latter to the Society of the Sacred Heart of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, because the Prussian government did not admit foreign congregations, she herself founded a new congregation which, besides caring for young blind children, would also devote itself to the education of girls. M. immediately became its first superior. The Kulturkampf compelled her religious to go into exile; they were thus able to open new houses in the United States, which she later visited, inspiring them with her spirit. The decree of praise of 13 April 1859 added to the title of the Congregation that of “Daughters of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception”; and the Institute soon attained wide expansion. In 1933 the processes for M.’s beatification were introduced.
