MALLON, ALEXIS. - Jesuit, orientalist and biblical scholar, b. at La Chapelle-Bertin (Haute-Loire) in France on 8 May 1875, d. at Jerusalem on 7 Apr. 1933. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1893. He taught Egyptian and Coptic languages first at the University of St. Joseph in Beirut, then in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute from 1910 to 1913-14. He was the first superior of the house of that same Institute in Jerusalem, where he directed the excavations of Telejlât Gassûl until his death.

In addition to numerous articles mainly in Biblica and in Mélanges de l'Université St-Joseph, he wrote: Grammaire copte avec bibliographie, chrestomathie et vocabulaire (3rd ed., Beirut 1926); La religion des Égyptiens, in J. Huby, Christus, Paris 1916, pp. 604-87; Les Hébreux en Égypte (Orientalia, 3), Rome 1921; Toutanhamon, son tombeau, son siècle (ibid. 1924); Telejlât Ghassûl, I. Compte rendu des fouilles de l'Institut biblique pontifical 1929-32, in collaboration with R. Köppel and R. Neuville (ibid. 1934); The religion of ancient Egypt (London 1934).
