MALLON, ALEXIS. - Jesuit, orientalist, and biblical scholar, b. at La Chapelle-Bertin (Haute-Loire), France, on 8 May 1875, d. at Jerusalem on 7 Apr. 1933. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1893. He taught Egyptian and Coptic, first at the University of St. Joseph in Beirut, then in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute from 1910 to 1913-14. He was the first superior of the house of the same Institute in Jerusalem, where he directed the excavations at Telejlât Gassûl until his death.
