ALEXIS MALLON. - Jesuit, Orientalist, and Biblical scholar, born at La Chapelle-Bertin (Haute-Loire) in France on 8 May 1875, died at Jerusalem on 7 April 1933. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1893, studied Egyptian and Coptic languages first at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, then in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute from 1910 to 1913–14. He was the first superior of the Jerusalem house of the same Institute, where he directed the excavations at Teleilat Ghassul until his death.
Besides numerous articles, mainly in Biblica and in Mélanges de l’Université Saint-Joseph, he wrote: Grammaire copte avec bibliographie, chrestomathie et vocabulaire (3rd ed., Beirut 1926); La religion des Egyptiens, in J.
