MARTINAE CELEBRI PLAUDITE NOMINI

"MARTINAE CELEBRI PLAUDITE NOMINI." - Hymn at Matins of the feast of St. Martina, composed by Urban VIII.

St. Martina, a young Roman patrician woman, suffered martyrdom under Alexander Severus and was buried at the foot of the Capitoline. Her body was rediscovered in 1634 under the pontificate of Urban VIII, who included her feast in the Breviary and composed its hymns.

The ode earnestly invites the Romans to celebrate in worthy fashion this illustrious fellow citizen of theirs, who, having scorned honors and riches, goes to meet atrocious sufferings.
