MASSIMA, DOMITILLA and SECONDA, saints, martyrs. - They are commemorated in the Martyrologio gerontiniano, in agreement with the Carthaginian Calendar, on 30 July. There exists a Passio composed in the fifth century, but it is certainly a reworking of an older one which must have concerned only M. and D.
The present recension comes from a Donatist milieu, and S. was added to it because she was perhaps commemorated on the same day as the first two. During the persecution of Diocletian, the proconsul Anulino appeared at the possessio Cephalitana near Thuburbo to promulgate
the edict requiring sacrifice. The entire frightened population apostatized en masse, except for two young women, M. and D., who were therefore arrested. Taken into the city and persisting in their faith, they were condemned to be beheaded. While they were being led to execution, S., driven by the desire for martyrdom, in an outburst of faith threw herself from a window and died.
