Maximin, Bishop of the Goths

MASSIMINO, bishop of the Goths. — He lived
at the end of the 4th century and the beginning of the 5th; he was,
apparently, of Danubian origin. A personality that could become
of considerable theological and literary interest were the intricate
problems concerning his identification and a more secure attribution
of his works to be resolved. He accompanied a Gothic military expe-
dition commanded by Count Segisvult, sent to Africa by the court
of Ravenna to suppress the revolt of Count Boniface.

On that occasion he engaged in a Trinitarian dispute with
St. Augustine, as is shown by two works attributed to the latter
and by the Vita Augustini of Possidius. With some probability, it
was he who also entered into a literary controversy with St. Ambrose
through a Dissertatio of Trinitarian content. There are, moreover,
arguments (although very far from being conclusive) for regarding
as his certain treatises and sermons falsely attributed to St. Maximus
of Turin; some Arian fragments formerly placed under the name of
Palladius; and an Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum, which appears
among the works of St. John Chrysostom.
