METROPHANES II. — Greek Uniate Patriarch (4 May 1440–1 August 1443), born around the beginning of the 15th century; he took part in the Council of Florence as metropolitan of Cyzicus and signed the bull of union (6 July 1439). Elected Greek Uniate Patriarch of Constantinople and enthroned on 5 May, during the solemn liturgy he made the liturgical commemoration of the Pope.
M. wrote letters to the Greeks of Crete and Modon, announcing to them his elevation to the patriarchal see and exhorting them to observe the union of the Council of Florence. His brief patriarchate was greatly obstructed. Nevertheless, his perseverance in the Catholic faith and in obedience to the Pope contributed to the fact that, after his death, another bishop of Catholic sentiments was elected to succeed him: Gregory Mamma.
