METROPHANES II. — A Greek Uniate Patriarch (4 May 1440–1 Aug. 1443), born toward the beginning of the 15th century; he took part in the Council of Florence as metropolitan of Cyzicus and subscribed to the bull of union (6 July 1439). Elected Greek Uniate Patriarch of Constantinople and enthroned on 5 May, during the solemn liturgy he made the liturgical commemoration of the Pope.
M. wrote letters to the Greeks of Crete and Modon, announcing to them his elevation to the patriarchal see and urging them to observe the union decreed by the Council of Florence. His brief patriarchate was much hindered. Nevertheless, his steadfastness in the Catholic faith and obedience to the Pope contributed to the fact that after his death another bishop of Catholic sentiments was elected to succeed him: Gregory Mammas.
