Nanni, Remigio

NANNI, REMIGIO. - Dominican theologian, b. in Florence in 1522, d. there ca. 1580. A religious in the Convent of S. Maria Novella, where he remained for a great part of his life, he also spent many years in Venice (1556-78). In 1563 he was summoned to Rome by Pius V to work on the critical edition of the works of St. Thomas (Roman edition of 1570).

Principal works: De Summi Pontificis auctoritate, de Episcoporum residentia et beneficiorum pluralitate gravissimorum auctorum complurium opuscula ad apostolicae Sedis dignitatem majestatemque tuendam spectantia (2 vols., Venice 1562), in which he published precious opuscules of St. Thomas, of G. Torrecremata, of Gaetano, of Nacchiante, of B. Carranza, of Domenico Soto, of Tommaso Campeggi and A. Catarino; In Sacros utriusque Testamentum libre annotationes non poenitendae (ibid. 1566); it is an original commentary on Holy Scripture with the history of illustrious personages and the description of the flora and fauna of the Bible; Considerationi cento civili sopra l'histoire di F. Guicciardini e d'altri historici (ibid. 1682). He also published the Historie universali de' suoi tempi of G. Villani (ibid. 1559).
