OPICINO de CANISTRIS. - Priest, draughtsman, and talented miniaturist, b. at Lomello (Pavia) on 24 Dec. 1296, d. after 1334. In 1323 he became parish priest of S. Maria di Copella at Pavia. Of poor family, he was able to enter the court of Avignone (Apr. 1329), where he received the title of scribe of the Apostolic Penitentiary (4 Dec. 1330).
He wrote several works, of which the following were published: Liber de laudibus civitatis Ticinensis (RIS, XI, Bologna 1903) and Descriptio universi coelestis, published by F. Gianani under the title L'anonimo ticinese (Pavia 1927); but the edition by R. Salomon, Das Weltbild eines ewignonesischen Klerikers (Vorträge der Bibliothek Warburg, 6), Lipsia 1930, pp. 145-89, is preferable; R. Scholz published an analysis and some extracts from the treatise De praeminentia spirituolis Imperii, in Unbekannte kirchenpolitische Streitschriften aus der Zeit Ludwigs des Bayern, II, Roma 1914, pp. 89-104.
