OPICINO de CANISTRIS. - Priest, draftsman and miniaturist of talent, b. at Lomello (Pavia) on 24 Dec. 1296, d. after 1334. In 1323 he became curate at S. Maria di Copella in Pavia. Poor by family, he was able to enter the court of Avignon (Apr. 1329) and there held the title of scribe of the Apostolic Penitentiary (4 Dec. 1330).

He wrote several works, of which the following were published: Liber de laudibus civitatis Ticinensis (RIS, XI, Bologna 1903) and Descriptio universi coelestis published by F. Gianani under the title L'anonimo ticinese (Pavia 1927); but the edition by R. Salomon, Das Weltbild eines ewignonesischen Klerikers (Vorträge der Bibliothek Warburg, 6), Leipzig 1930, pp. 145-89, is preferable; R. Scholz has published an analysis and some extracts of the treatise De praeminentia spiritualis Imperii, in Unbekannte kirchenpolitische Streitschriften aus der Zeit Ludwigs des Bayern, II, Rome 1914, pp. 89-104.
