OSWALD, Saint. - Two saints of this name deserve remembrance: St. Oswald, king of Northumbria, apostle of Christianity, killed in the battle of Maserfield on 5 Aug. 642 and venerated as a martyr (Martyrologium Romanum, p. 324, with a rich bibliography) and St. Oswald, archbishop of York, d. 28 Feb. 992. A canon of the cathedral chapter of Winchester, of which he later became dean, he went to France, where he began the monastic life in the abbey of Fleury. Having returned to his homeland, in 961 Oswald was appointed bishop of Worcester and in 972 he passed to the see of York, while still retaining the governance of Worcester.
In both dioceses he carried on the most effective activity for the reform of the clergy and of the faithful, and lavished his means in favor of the poor. He devoted particular care to the monastic life, with the foundation of seven new monasteries (among them that of Ramsey) and with the introduction of exemplary monks into the more ancient monasteries. In all the monasteries founded or reformed by him he introduced the customs of the abbey of Fleury. In a short time his disciples increased and in several places they even replaced the secular clergy in the cathedrals. St. Oswald the king: feast 5 Aug.; St. Oswald the archbishop: feast 28 Feb.
