The mausoleum, of unparalleled solemnity, consists of a vast Gothic pavilion supported by clustered columns, divided by polygonal rings, where between small pilasters and pinnacles is a series of patriarchs, prophets, and saints. The sarcophagus, resting on columns to which are attached the statues of six Virtues, bears at the front and sides figures of the King and his family; upon it, within the mortuary chamber whose curtains are held aloft by two angels, lies the recumbent statue of the King, dressed in the Franciscan habit, watched over by the Seven Arts of the trivium and quadrivium. Above, beneath the pavilion, the King is seated on a throne, his face reflecting the death mask, with frescoed figures of prelates and barons; higher still the Virgin with S. FRANCIS and S. CHIARA, and at her feet the King.
The grand ensemble follows the type established by TINO di CAMAINO, though enriched plastically in the manner of NINO PISANO.
P. and G. are also credited with the tomb of LUDOVICO da DURAZZO in the same church, and probably the ancient altar of the church of S. CHIARA; while the reliefs of the legend of S. CATHERINE are not their work.
