PALLADIUS, First Bishop of the Scots. - By the name Scots (Scoti) are meant both the Celts of Ireland (Gaels) and those of Scotland (ancient Caledonia) and the Picts settled in the south of the country.
This twofold designation has given rise to confusion regarding the historical figure of P., by whom in reality must be understood the one sent by Celestine I in 431 "ad Scottos in Christum credentes" (cf. Prosper of Aquitaine, Chronica, in MGH, Auct. antiq., IX, Chron. minora, I, p. 472), who found the island for the most part pagan and could not draw notable results from his apostolate, almost immediately cut short by death, and continued the following year by St. Patrick (v.). A tradition unworthy of belief traces P. back, badly received upon his landing at Hy Garchon (Wicklow), northward into the region of the Picts, where he is said to have carried out his apostolate for 27 years, to have had dealings with Brude (697-706) king of the Picts, and where he is said to have died, that is, more than two centuries after P.'s Irish mission. In reality the conversion of Scotland is due in the 6th century to the apostolate of the Irish abbot St. Columba. The feast of P. is recorded by the ancient Scottish liturgy on 6 July.
