PALLADIUS, Heretical Bishop of Ratiaria. - Elected bishop, he initially fought among the Photinians, and was therefore deposed at the Council of Sirmium in 351.
He recovered the see by converting to Arianism and was, to the end, one of the principal supporters of the Homoian party in Illyricum. At the time of the Nicene restoration, he at first managed to avoid condemnation, by not presenting himself at the Council of Sirmium (July 378) and by calling for the convocation of a general council in which he hoped to justify himself. He had instead to take part in the Council of Aquileia (5 Sept. 381), at which St. Ambrose, reading him the letter of Arius to Alexander, asked whether he condemned it or not. He tried to evade answering by appealing to a general council, but he was convicted of heresy, excommunicated and deposed.
He wrote a treatise, now lost, against the De fide of St. Ambrose. And it seems that the palimpsest fragments of certain polemical treatises published by A. Mai in the Scriptorum veterum nova collectio, III, Rome, part 2, pp. 208-39, should be attributed to P.
