PAUL OF THEBES, St. — First hermit, born c. 234 in the Thebaid to wealthy parents. According to his biographer St. Jerome, during the persecution of Decius, fearing denunciation as a Christian, he fled to a mountain and took up residence in a cave that had once belonged to coin counterfeiters.
There he led a life of almost complete solitude in prayer and penance for nearly a hundred years, nourishing himself on the fruit of palm trees and covering himself with a tunic woven from their leaves. At the age of 113
