PAUL DI BERNRIED. - Regular canon of St. Augustine, d. c. 1146. He wrote a Vita Gregorii VII (1128), the Vita Herlucae (1130) and several private letters to the clergy of Milan. Around 1100 he was a canon of Regensburg, he militated in the strict Gregorian party and, after long persecutions, had to flee with his disciple Gebhard in 1121.
Ordained a priest in 1117, he deepened his relations with the Regular Canons of St. Augustine, often visiting, at Epfach, Sigebot of Rottenbuch and the recluse Herluka. He entered the monastery of Bernried founded in 1122, went to Rome to obtain the bull of confirmation, stopping at Milan on his return. In 1126, under Bishop Cuno, he is at Regensburg; finally he withdraws to the monastery of the Regular Canons of St. Augustine of St. Mang, founded by Gebhard in Stadtamhof. P. was an active compiler. He strove to propagate the liturgy of Milan. His identity with Paulus Judaeus, author of a Vita Erhardi, is not clear.
