RECOLLECTINE PENITENTS OF OIRSCHOT. - The Institute is a branch detached from the Congregation of Limburg, founded on 21 Sept. 1623 by Mother Giovanna di Gesù and approved by Urban VIII on 15 July 1634.
The ancient Constitutions, which remained in force for the detached branches of Oirschot, Oisterwijk and Gemert until 1878, were revised, adapted and approved by the S. Congregation of Propaganda on 26 July of that year and on 2 June 1891, when the three detached branches united under a common regime. After the publication of the Code they were again revised and approved by the S. Congregation of Religious on 6 Feb. 1928. The Mother House is at Oirschot (Holland).
The Institute devotes itself to the education of youth and to the care of the aged and the sick. It is composed of choir sisters and converse sisters who take simple, temporary and perpetual vows. At the end of 1949 the sisters numbered 695 and the novices 27, distributed among 30 houses.
