PENITENTI RECOLLETTINE DI OIRSCHOT. – The Institute is an offshoot of the Congregation of Limburg, founded on 21 September 1623 by Mother Giovanna di Gesù and approved by Urban VIII on 15 July 1634.
The ancient Constitutions, which remained in force for the offshoots of Oirschot, Oisterwijk, and Gemert until 1878, were revised, adapted, and approved by the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda on 26 July of that year and on 2 June 1891, when the three offshoots were reunited under a common government. After the publication of the Code, they were revised once again and approved by the Sacred Congregation of Religious on 6 February 1928. The Mother House is at Oirschot (Netherlands).
The Institute is engaged in the education of young people
and in the care of the elderly and the sick. It consists of choir sisters and lay sisters who make simple, temporary, and perpetual vows. At the end of 1949, there were 695 sisters and 27 novices, distributed among 30 houses.
