PEYRAUT, GUILLAUME. - Dominican moralist, b. ca. 1200 at Peyraud, department of Ardèche, d. after 3 Feb. 1261 at Lyon. He was famous under the name Peraldus or Péraud, falsely called "archiepiscopus Lugdunensis". He was one of the greatest preachers and moralists of his century. He must have entered the Dominicans of Lyon ca. 1236-40. In 1249 Friar Salimbene attests to his activity as preacher and confessor at Vienne. He was several times, as in 1261, prior of the convent of Lyon. He had great spiritual influence through his "Summa".

He wrote, among other things: Summa de vitiis et virtutibus (Basel 1469, and 14 other editions before 1500, and 23 after); Sermones de dominicis et festis (Ulm 1486, etc.); Expositio professionis monachorum (Paris 1500, etc.); De eruditione principum (Rome 1570) is probably his, among the works of St. Thomas.
