MEDINGEN (MÖDINGEN). - Medieval convent of Dominican nuns, in the diocese of Augsburg; since 1843 it has belonged to the Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen.
A quarter of an hour from M. stands the convent of Maria M., existing since 1239 and endowed with a new building in 1246 by Artmanno IV, count of Dillingen. Subject to the German Dominican provincials, it had as patrons the bishops of Augsburg and the dukes of Bavaria and of Pfalz-Neuburg. Numbering 70 nuns in 1260, the community founded a convent at Obermedlingen. Enrico (v.) da Nördlingen made M. a centre of the Friends of God and guided Blessed Margherita Ebner (d. 1351).
It was reformed (1468) in observance; but in 1546 the convent succumbed to the Protestants. Restored in 1616, with the church enlarged (1716–18) and the chapel of Blessed Ebner (1755), a jewel of rococo, the community was secularized in 1802–1803. The Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen devote themselves to the education of girls and to the cult of Blessed Ebner.
