MEDINGEN (MÖDINGEN). - Medieval monastery of Dominican nuns, in the diocese of Augsburg; since 1843 it has belonged to the Franciscan nuns of Dillingen.

A quarter of an hour away from M. is the monastery of Maria M., in existence since 1239, enriched with a new building in 1246 by Artmann IV, Count of Dillingen. Subject to the Dominican provincials of Germany, it had as patrons the bishops of Augsburg and the dukes of Bavaria and of Pfalz-Neuburg. Counting 70 nuns in 1260, the community founded a monastery at Obermedlingen. Henry (v.) of Nördlingen made M. a center of the Friends of God and directed the blessed Margareta Ebner (d. 1351).

It was reformed (1468) in the observance; but in 1546 the monastery succumbed to the Protestants. Restored in 1616, with the church enlarged (1716-18) and the chapel of the blessed Ebner (1755), a jewel of rococo, the community was secularized in 1802-1803. The Franciscan nuns of Dillingen devote themselves to boarding students and to the cult of the blessed Ebner.
