MOMME NISSEN, BENEDETTO. — Dominican, born on 26 April 1870 at Deezbuehl (Schleswig), died on 23 June 1943 at Ilanz (Grisons).
Having met Giulio Langbehn, painter and critic and author of Rembrandt als Erzieher, in 1890, he became his faithful friend and able biographer. At Altötting and Munich, M. N. had fruitful contacts with the nuncio, Msgr. Frühwirth, who was not uninvolved in his conversion; this was soon followed by his entry among the Dominicans in 1917 and his priestly ordination in 1922. Devoting himself fervently to sacred oratory and religious literature, M. N. achieved considerable fame as a lecturer and ecclesiastical writer in German-speaking countries.
In addition to numerous learned articles, he is responsible for: Der Rembrandtddeutsche (Friburgo in Br. 1926); Der Geist des Ganzen (ivi 1930); Kultur der Seele (ivi 1935); Meine Seele in der Welt (ivi 1940).
