MOMBRIZIO, BONINO. - Italian humanist, b. in 1424, d. in Milan in 1500. Having completed his studies in Ferrara, from 1460 he lived in Milan, teaching Latin and Greek letters and carrying on a notable activity as translator and editor of sacred and patristic works, such as the Glossary of Papias, the Mirabilia of Solinus, the Chronicles of Eusebius, Jerome, Prosper and Matteo Palmieri (Milan 1475).
Of particular importance is his hagiographic collection, Sanctuarium. Vitae Sanctorum (Milan ca. 1480), which comprises 334 "legends" of martyrs and confessors. M. is the first who, without indulging in reworkings in humanistic taste, with serious philological criterion, published hagiographic texts in full, drawn directly from ancient manuscript codices. However, the problem of the sources of the Sanctuarium has not yet been completely solved. A reprint of the same, in two volumes, was edited by the Benedictines of Solesmes (Paris 1910). A short poem in Italian verse on St. Catherine of Alexandria has also been preserved from M. (La légende de ste Catherine d'Alexandrie. Poème italien du XVᵉ siècle, edited by A. Bayot-P. Groult, Gembloux 1943).
