SCHÖNBERG (SCHOMBERG, SCOMBER), NIKOLAUS von. - Dominican cardinal, b. at Meissen on 11 Aug. 1472, d. at Rome between 7 and 10 Aug. 1537.
He was prior at Lucca, Siena, and Florence (S. Marco [1506-1507]), procurator general in 1508-15; visitor in Germany (1512), archbishop of Capua from 1520 to 1536, cardinal of S. Sisto on 21 May 1535. Under Julius II he took part in the Fifth Lateran Council. Leo X and Clement VII sent him to Poland, Hungary, Spain, France, and England. He governed Florence in 1530.
He wrote Orationes 5 de admiranda Christi pugna cum diabolo in deserto (Leipzig 1511 and 1684); Epistole in Lettere de Principi (Venice 1570-77); unpublished are the Sermones de tempore et sanctis and a paraphrase of the epistle of St. John (Cod. Monac., 298, fols. 1-24).
