LITTLE SERVANTS OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. - In 1850 in western Poland Edmondo Bojanowski gathered some pious women in a house of his and entrusted them with the care of orphans. To them the archbishop of Gniezno and Posen granted triennial vows, traced out a method of life and, after a period of probation, gave them a Superior and their own Constitutions.
In 1860 they were called to Galicia, to Premislia; but the new foundation, because of political impositions, had to make itself independent of the mother house, which remained in territory subject to Prussia. Thus was born the Institute of the P. S. dell'I. C., which received the decree of praise on 22 Feb. 1904, the temporary approval of the Constitutions on 9 Dec. 1930, and the definitive approval on 21 May 1940. The purpose of the Institute is to promote the Christian life among the young and to care for the sick and the mentally deficient; for this reason the Sisters have conservatories, orphanages, schools, workshops, associations and the like. In 1940 the sisters numbered 1315 and the novices 92, and they had 306 houses scattered across 15 dioceses.
