PINAMONTI, GIOVANNI PIETRO. - Jesuit, preacher, and writer on asceticism, b. at Pistoia on 27 Dec. 1632, d. during a mission, at Orta (diocese of Novara), on 26 June 1703.
Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1647, he was for 26 years the companion of Fr P. Segneri, senior, in the ministry of popular missions; he also assisted him in preparing and composing certain works (e.g., the Confessore istruito), and himself composed others of an ascetical nature, much sought after, especially for their clear doctrine and sweetness of style as well as for their effectiveness. Principal works: La vera sapienza (Venice 1683), Lo specchio che non inganna (Florence 1686), La religiosa in solitudine (Bologna 1695), La croce alleggerita (Modena 1699), Il S. Cuore di Maria Vergine (Florence 1699), Il direttore (posthumous, ibid. 1705).
