POLE, Margaret, Blessed. - English martyr, b. at Castle Farley, near Bath, on 14 Aug. 1473, to George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence, d. in London on 27 May 1541.

In 1491 she married Sir Richard P., nephew of Henry VIII, by whom she had five children. Left a widow, and invested with the title of Countess of Salisbury, she was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine of Aragon and governess of Princess Mary. The frank writing Pro ecclesiasticae unitatis defensione by her son Cardinal Reginald and his two legations irritated the King against her, and in 1539 he had her imprisoned. For her fidelity to Rome, she languished for two years in the prisons of the Tower and, without trial or defense, on 27 May 1541, was beheaded. Leo XIII declared her blessed (2 Feb. 1886).
