POULPIQUET, AMBROISE de. - Dominican apologist, b. at Lesmel in Plouguerneau (Finistère) on 25 June 1878, d. at Brest on 22 Apr. 1915. He entered religious life in 1896, was ordained priest in 1902, and taught apologetics at the theological College of Le Saulchoir from 1906 to 1914.
He wrote three important works: L'objet intégral de l'apologétique (Paris 1912), which shows the synthetic character of the motives of credibility and the necessary union existing between “internal” apologetics and “external” apologetics; Le miracle et ses suppléances (ibid. 1914), which emphasizes the supernatural “presuppositions” of the miracle, which confer upon it its full value as a motive of credibility, and its social aspect; L'Eglise catholique. Etude apologétique (ibid. 1923), a posthumous work (with a preface by A. Gardeil), in which to the historical aspect of the apologetics of the Church are added some important developments concerning the Church as a motive of credibility, and concerning the respective methods of apologetics and theology. He also published a considerable number of articles in the Revue des sciences philosophiques et théologiques and in the Revue du clergé français.
