POOR HANDMAIDS OF THE MOTHER OF GOD. – Institute founded in Westminster (England) in 1868 by the devout lady Maria Maddalena Taylor.

The purpose proposed by the foundress was charitable assistance, in every form, to the poor. From England the Congregation spread to Ireland, France, and Italy. On 7 August 1879, Cardinal E. E. Manning obtained from the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith the decree of praise, while definitive approval was granted on 19 July 1900. At present there are 510 sisters distributed among 34 houses.
