CESARE RANZOLI. — Philosopher, born in Mantua on 13 April 1876, died in Genoa on 8 February 1926. He was professor of philosophy at the University of Messina from 1918 and at that of Genoa from 1922.
A pupil of Ardigo (q.v.), after a critical re-examination of positivism (q.v.) he moved, through idealism (*L'idealismo e la filosofia*, Turin 1920), to a kind of realism, seeking to reconcile the opposing demands of idealistic subjectivism and realistic objectivism (*Il realismo puro*, posthumous work, Rome n.d. [1932]). He wrote extensively, especially articles, contributing to various journals (*Rivista d’Italia*, *Rivista di filosofia*, *Scientia*, *Lagos*), and compiled a valuable *Dizionario di scienze filosofiche* (Milan 1905; 4th posthumous ed. by his widow, ibid. 1943).
