RANZOLI, CESARE. - Philosopher, b. in Mantua on 13 April 1876, d. in Genoa on 8 February 1926. He was professor of philosophy at the University of Messina from 1918 and at that of Genoa from 1922.

A pupil of Ardigò (v.), from a critical revision of positivism (v.) he passed, through idealism (L'idealismo e la filosofia, Turin 1920), to a sort of realism, attempting to unify the opposing demands of idealistic subjectivism and realistic objectivism (Il realismo puro, posthumous work, Rome n.d. [1932]). He wrote a great deal, especially articles, collaborating with various journals (Riv. d'Italia, Riv. di filos., Scientia, Logos), and compiled a valuable Dizionario di scienze filosofiche (Milan 1905; 4th posthumous ed. edited by his widow, ibid. 1943).
