RICCARDI, FAMILY. - The earliest known progenitor is an ANICHINO di Riccardo who, perhaps coming from Cologne, moved to Florence in the 14th century. During the Republic the R. had little importance, but they achieved considerable economic power through trade. They obtained greater authority during the Medicean principate, and some of them were senators.

FRANCESCO di Cosimo (1648-1719) was entrusted with embassies to Clement X and to Leopold I. RICCARDO ROMOLO (1558-1611) formed the first nucleus of the Library that was called the Riccardiana and that in 1815 was donated to the State by the municipality of Florence. In 1629 Ferdinand II invested the brothers COSIMO and GABRIELLO di Francesco with the fief of Chianni, with the title of marquis. In 1659 the same grand duke sold to the R. the Medicean Palace on Via Larga, which they embellished and had frescoed by Luca Giordano.
