ROCKHAMPTON, DIOCESE OF. – Located in the State of Queensland (Australia), it was erected on 29 December 1882 with territory taken from the Diocese of Brisbane and constituted a suffragan of Sydney.
On 10 May 1887 it was declared a suffragan of Brisbane. The remainder of Queensland’s territory had already been erected as the Apostolic Vicariate of Queensland on 30 January 1877, and on 10 May 1887 it changed its name to Cook (v. CAIRNS) with a slight adjustment of boundaries KIMBERLEY, DIOCESI DI (v.). On 12 February 1930 part of its territory was detached to form the new Diocese of Townsville.
The territory covers 300,000 sq km and has a population of about 150,256, of whom 30,256 are Catholic, 120,000 Protestant; there are 74 priests, 25 brothers, 312 sisters, and 35 parishes. The school system is well developed, as are charitable works and Catholic Action.
