ROCKHAMPTON, DIOCESE of. - Situated in the State of Queensland (Australia), it was erected on 29 Dec. 1882 with territory detached from the diocese of Brisbane and constituted a suffragan of Sydney.
On 10 May 1887 it was declared a suffragan of Brisbane. The rest of the territory of Queensland had already been erected into the apostolic vicariate of Queensland on 30 Jan. 1877, and on 10 May 1887 it changed its name to that of Cook (v. CAIRNS), with a slight modification of its boundaries KIMBERLEY, DIOCESI DI (v.). On 12 Feb. 1930 the new diocese of Townsville was partly detached from II.
The territory has an area of 300,000 sq. km., with a population of approximately 150,256 inhabitants, of whom 30,256 are Catholics and 120,000 Protestants; 74 priests, 25 brothers, 312 sisters, and 35 parishes. The school organization is well developed, as are charitable works and Catholic Action.
