SAGARI, saint, martyr. — Bishop of Laodicea, d. about 175, during the persecution of Marcus Aurelius.
Adon introduced him into the Martyrology, deriving the information from Eusebius (Hist. eccl., IV, 26 and V, 24), who, in turn, inserted into his Historia what Melito of Sardis had written in his short work On Easter. But, on the basis of the Eusebian indication “Sub Sergio Paulo proconsule Asiae,” Adon believed that he recognized in it the proconsul Sergio Paolo mentioned in Act. 13:7–12, without considering the anachronism between the first and the second centuries. Melito had recalled that, at the time of the martyr S. in Laodicea, the great controversy over Easter had arisen. In the Martyrologium Romanum, the memorial of S. is recorded on 6 October.
