SAGARI, SANTO, MARTIRE

SAGARI, Saint, Martyr. - Bishop of Laodicea, died around 175, during the persecution of Marcus Aurelius.

Ado introduced him into the Martyrology, deriving the notice from Eusebius (Hist. eccl., IV, 26 and V, 24), who in turn had inserted into his Historia what Melito of Sardis had written in his pamphlet On the Pasch. But Ado, on the basis of the Eusebian indication "Sub Sergio Paulo proconsule Asiae," believed he recognized in it the proconsul Sergius Paulus of whom Acts 13:7-12 speaks, without thinking of the anachronism of the 1st century with the 2nd century. Melito had recalled that in the time of the martyr St. [Sagaris] the great question concerning the Pasch had arisen at Laodicea. In the Martyrologium Romanum the commemoration of St. [Sagaris] is recorded on October 6.
