SAGMULLER, Johannes Baptist. - One of the most renowned modern canonists and legal historians, born at Winterreute (Württemberg) on 24 Feb. 1860, died at Tübingen on 22 Oct. 1942.
Ordained priest on 28 July 1884, he pursued university studies at Tübingen and Rottenburg and earned a degree in philosophy (1888), but in 1893 he turned to teaching history at Tübingen, where from 1896 to 1926 he held the chair of canon law and pedagogy. He also collaborated in the drafting of the CIC.
His earliest works were on ecclesiastical history: *Die Papstwahlen und die Staaten von 1447-1553* (Tübingen 1890); *Das staatl. Recht der Exklusive in der Papstwahl* (1878); Mainz 1895; *Zur Gesch. des Kardinalates* (Rome-Freiburg in Br. 1896); *Die Entwicklung des Archi-presbyterats und Dekanats bis zum Ende des Karolingerreichs* (Tübingen 1898). He then oriented himself toward legal studies: *Lehrbuch des kath. Kirchenrechts* (Freiburg in Br. 1900-1904; the 4th ed., 1912-1934, adapted to the CIC but left unfinished); *Kirche und Staat* (Stuttgart 1904); *Trennung von Kirche u.
