SÄGMULLER, JOHANNES BAPTIST. — One of the best-known modern canonists and historians of law, born at Winterreute (Württemberg) on 24 February 1860, died at Tübingen on 22 October 1942.
Ordained a priest on 28 July 1884, he attended university courses at Tübingen and Rottenburg and obtained a degree in philosophy (1888); in 1893, however, he began teaching history at Tübingen, where from 1896 to 1926 he was professor of canon law and pedagogy. He also contributed to the drafting of the CIC.
His earliest works concern ecclesiastical history: Die Papstwahlen und die Staaten von 1447-1555 (Tübingen 1890); Das staatl.
