SALUZZO, FERDINANDO. - Cardinal, b. in Naples on 21 Sept. 1744, d. in Rome on 3 Nov. 1816.
Enrolled in the College of Apostolic Protonotaries Participating, he was vice-legate of Ferrara and, under Pius VI, ponente of the Consulta; in 1783, having been elected titular archbishop of Carthage, he was sent as nuncio to Poland. President of Urbino in 1796, he earned merit by completing the construction of the Furlo road and found himself facing a delicate situation with the surrender (1797) of the fortress of S. Leo to the French troops. Created and published cardinal by Pius VII in the Consistory of 23 Febr. 1801, he maintained a noble and dignified conduct: having refused to attend the marriage of Napoleon to Marie Louise, he was first relegated to Sedan with Card. Galleffi, then to St-Pons. In 1816 he became president of the Congregation of Buon Governo.
