SANGERMANO, VINCENZO. - Barnabite missionary, b. 22 Apr. 1758 at Arpino, where he died on 28 July 1819.
A pupil of the Barnabites and then himself a Barnabite at the age of sixteen, in 1782 he departed with Fr. D'Amato (v.) for Burma. At Rangoon, for twenty-four years, he directed an educational college. Among his pupils were Andrea Coo and Ignazio de Brito, who later became Barnabites. At the same time he also practised medicine and collected a great quantity of information which, arranged and accompanied by coloured plates, forms his famous Relazione dell'Impero barmano. His confrère Fr. Galassi published it posthumously in the original Italian (Rome, 1833), in the same year in which a first English translation had already appeared, likewise in Rome, from Salviucci, with a preface by the future Cardinal Wiseman; this was followed by three further editions: at Rangoon in 1885, under the auspices of the Indian government; at Westminster in 1893, with a substantial introduction by J. Jardine; and in 1924. Compelled by the political upheavals in Europe to return to his homeland, in 1808 S. was at Arpino, superior and prefect of the schools of S. Carlo of his Order and, from 1814 to 1818, first rector and professor of mathematics and philosophy at the Tulliano. Among S.'s manuscripts is also a Topografia fisica di Arpino e suo circondario, of 1812.
