CARLO GIUSEPPE QUADRUPANI. – Barnabite, preacher “celebrated throughout all Italy,” born at Induno (Varese) in 1740, died there on 14 July 1806. He was proposed for the see of S. Alessandro in Milan and served as Provincial Superior of the Lombardy province.
After his first Lenten preaching in 1771 at the church of S. Lorenzo in Damaso in Rome, his ordinary mission became preaching: for 38 years he continued to preach Lent in the principal cities of Italy, while expounding Scripture in the churches of his Order, giving spiritual exercises to clergy and laity, and being much sought after in the confessional and at the bedsides of the dying. Quadrupani’s fame is bound up with his Documenti per istruzione e tranquillità delle anime tratti da santi più illuminati e massime da s. Francesco di Sales left by Fr. C. G. Quadrupani, Barnabite regular, on the occasion of the Spiritual Exercises he gave in the metropolitan church of Turin after the Octave of Easter 1795 (Turin 1795; P. B. Lanteri [v.] assisted in preparing this first edition). The title Documenti per tranquillare le anime timorose nelle loro dubbiezze was adopted from the 30th edition onward (Milan 1807); the work was subsequently republished down to our own day and translated into several languages, with more than a hundred editions.
Also by Quadrupani are the Documenti pratici per vivere cristianamente (posthumous, Milan 1807; later issued in many editions, sometimes together with the Documenti per tranquillare, and often under the cumulative title Documenti di vita spirituale).
