SCHILLING, CARL HALFDAN. – Barnabite, Servant of God, b. in Christiania on June 9, 1835, d. in Mouscron (Belgium) on Jan. 2, 1907.
Converted from Lutheranism (1854) while attending painting courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf, in 1868, under the guidance of Fr. P. Stub (author of widely circulated spiritual books, and builder of the first Catholic church in Bergen, dedicated to St. Paul), his fellow countryman and himself a convert, he entered the novitiate of the Barnabites at Aubigny (France), and on Dec. 18, 1875, he was ordained a priest. Five years at Aubigny, seven in Italy as vice-master of novices at Monza, twenty at Mouscron, mark the chapters of his industrious apostolate in the confessional and in the example of heroic virtues. During 1949 the apostolic process for his beatification was completed. In the Civic Museum of Christiania are some of his prize-winning paintings, among them The Beggar, his masterpiece, and several Norwegian landscapes. His cause for beatification was introduced on Nov. 22, 1946 (AAS, 39 [1947], pp. 235-37).
