Sassi, Giuseppe Antonio

SASSI, GIUSEPPE ANTONIO. - Born in Milan in 1672, died in May 1751. Enrolled in the Congregation of the Oblates, in 1703 he entered among the doctors of the Ambrosian Library, became its prefect in 1711 and directed it until his death.

A most learned philologist, he reorganized the manuscripts of the Library and collaborated on Muratori's Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, of whom he was an intimate friend. He wrote, among other things, the De studii litterariis Mediolanensium... prodromus ad historiam typographicam Mediolanensem (Milan 1720), reproduced in vol. I of the Bibliotheca scriptorum Mediolanensium of Argelati (ibid. 1745), and he illustrated the chronicles of Landulf the Younger, of Galvano Fiamma and the new edition of Sigonio's De regno Italiae.
