Mount Scandal

SCANDALO, MONTE DELLO

MOUNT SCANDAL. - Name given by the Christian toponymy of Jerusalem to the hill east of the city, beyond the Kidron, south of the Mount of Olives, of which it is a spur.

The Arabs call it Gebel Batin el-Hawā. It would represent the har hawa-mafīth ("mount of perdition"); II Kings 23:13), facing Jerusalem (ibid. 11:7), where Solomon consecrated some "high places" to the deities of his foreign women.

From the Vulgate's translation mons offensissis came the present designation of "m. dello s.". Donato Baldi
