MOUNT OF SCANDAL (Mons Scandali). — The name given by Christian toponymy in Jerusalem to the hill east of the city, beyond the Kidron, south of the Mount of Olives, of which it is an extension.
The Arabs call it Ġebel Baṭn el-Hawā. It is said to represent the *har ḥam-naṣliḥt* («mount of perdition»: 2 Kings 23:13), opposite Jerusalem (ibid. 11:7), where Solomon consecrated some «high places» to the gods of his foreign wives.
From the translation of the Vulgate *mons offensionis* came the current designation of «Mount of Scandal».
