SCANDALO, MONTE. — Name given by the Christian toponymy of Jerusalem to the hill east of the city, beyond the Cedron, south of Monte Oliveto, of which it is an offshoot.
The Arabs call it Gebel Batin el-Hawā. It would represent the har hawa-mafīth (“mountain of perdition”; II Reg. 23:13), opposite Jerusalem (ibid. 11:7), where Solomon consecrated certain “high places” to the deities of his foreign women.
The current designation “m. dello s.” derives from the Vulgate translation mons offensissis. Donato Baldi
