MASSIMA, Domitilla and Seconda, Saints, Martyrs. - They are commemorated in the Hieronymian Martyrology, in agreement with the Carthaginian Calendar, on 30 July. There exists a Passio composed in the 5th century, but which is certainly a reworking of an older one that must have concerned only M. and D.

The present recension comes from a Donatist milieu, and S. was added to it because she was perhaps commemorated on the same day as the first two. During the persecution of Diocletian the proconsul Anulinus appeared at the possessio Cephalitana near Thuburbo, promulgating the edict to sacrifice. The whole frightened population apostatized en masse except for two young girls, M. and D., who were therefore arrested. Taken into the city and persisting in their faith, they were condemned to beheading. While they were being led to execution, S., driven by the desire for martyrdom, in an impulse of faith threw herself from a window and died.
