SEGHERS, DANIEL. - Jesuit, painter, b. at Antwerp on 6 Dec. 1590, d. there on 2 Nov. 1661.
A pupil in art of his father Peter and of Jan Brueghel, he attained the rank of master at Antwerp in 1611; then, having embraced Calvinism, he entered the Society of Jesus as a lay brother on 10 Dec. 1614. He also spent a short time in Rome to perfect his very marked talents for painting. He painted chiefly flowers and shrubs, garlands and festoons which framed portraits and images painted by other masters (Rubens, van Dyck, C. Schult, E. Quellin, A. van Diepenbeck) with great patience and exquisite taste in the play of colors, which made him sought after by princes and nobles. He also worked on vases and mirrors. Most of his works are scattered in museums and have merited for him not only valuable gifts but also poetic celebrations.
