SEGHERS, DANIEL. - Jesuit, painter, b. in Antwerp on 6 Dec. 1590, d. there on 2 Nov. 1661.

As a pupil in art of his father Peter and of Jan Brueghel, he attained the rank of master in Antwerp in 1611; then, having abjured Calvinism, he entered the Society of Jesus as a coadjutor brother on 10 Dec. 1614. He was also for a short time in Rome to perfect his talents, which were quite pronounced, for painting. He painted above all flowers and shrubs, garlands and festoons that framed portraits and images painted by other masters (Rubens, van Dyck, C. Schult, E. Quellin, A. van Diepenbeck) with a work of great patience and of exquisite taste in the play of colors, which made him sought after by princes and nobles. He did the same also on vases and on mirrors. The majority of his works are scattered in museums and earned him gifts of value and also poetic celebrations.
