MONTFORT, Simone IV de. - Leader of the Crusade against the Albigensians. From a very ancient family, son of Simon III, baron of Montfort, he was born in the second half of the 12th century, d. near Toulouse on 25 June 1218. In 1199, he took the cross for Palestine with Thiebaut of Champagne. On his return to France, he was assigned command of the expedition against the Albigensians, which he accepted with much hesitation (1208).
Once a strong army was constituted, in 1210, he threw himself into the struggle. In 1212 he took Lavaur after a siege that lasted a year, and on 12 Sept. 1213 he won the famous victory of Muret, over the Toulousans and the Catalans united. The King of Aragon was killed and Count Raymond of Toulouse fled. Becoming aware of the knight's ambition, the Pope proclaimed the end of the Crusade; however Simon continued it with more ardor than ever. Despite the warning of Innocent III, the Lateran Council, which expressly condemned the Albigensian heresy, confirmed S. in possession of the county of Toulouse and the Duchy of Narbonne (1215). But not a year had passed before he was driven out of Toulouse, which declared in favor of Raymond. S. set about proclaiming the necessity of a new crusade and undertook the siege of the city, during which he died.
