Ordained priest in 1822, he served as parish priest in his native town until 1830, when he left for Rome and then for Burma, devoting himself to an apostolate universally admired. Welcomed by the Emperor and later by the British colonial authorities for his selflessness, spirit of sacrifice, and skill, he became the first and foremost apostle among the various Karen tribes of southern Burma as far as Tenasserim.
