TAROLLI, DOMENICO. - Missionary in Burma, b. at Castello di Condino (Trento) on 18 Oct. 1797, d. 15 Dec. 1882 in Burma.

A priest in 1822, parish priest in his native town until 1830, he set out that year for Rome and then for Burma, devoting himself to an apostolate universally admired. Well received by the Emperor and later by the English colonial authorities for his disinterestedness, his spirit of sacrifice and his ability, he was the first and principal apostle of the various Karen tribes of southern Burma as far as the Tenasserim. While still alive he enjoyed a reputation for holiness and as a thaumaturge. He left in writing, in Burmese, a Dialogue on the true religion, which is a reworking of a work by Msgr. Percoto, a Barnabite; a Brief exercise of the Way of the Cross, also in Burmese, and some works on the Karen languages.
