TAROLLI, DOMENICO. – Missionary in Burma, b. at Castello di Condino (Trento) on 18 Oct. 1797, d. on 15 Dec. 1882 in Burma.
Ordained priest in 1822, he served as parish priest in his native place until 1830, when he left for Rome and thence for Burma, devoting himself to an apostolate universally admired. Welcomed by the Emperor and later by the British colonial authorities for his selflessness, spirit of sacrifice and skill, he became the first and foremost apostle among the various Karen tribes of southern Burma as far as Tenasserim. Even during his lifetime he enjoyed a reputation for holiness and thaumaturgy. He wrote in Burmese a Dialogue on the True Religion, which is a reworking of a work by Bp. Percoto, Barnabite; a Short Exercise of the Way of the Cross, also in Burmese, and some works on the Karen languages.
