PERCOTO, ANTONIO MARIA. - Barnabite missionary, bishop of Massul and vicar apostolic of the Kingdoms of Ava and Tavai (Burma), b. 25 June 1729 at Udine, d. at Ava (Burma) on 12 Dec. 1776.
Having entered the Barnabites, and while still a student of philosophy, he compiled a small volume on Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Bologna 1752, reprinted several times) and conceived "a society of fervent souls" who would strive "to honor and to make honored the Sacred Heart." Having gone to the mission of Ava and Pegu in 1760, he was elected vicar apostolic there (1765) and then consecrated bishop (1768). To him are owed the first Alphabetum Barmanum seu Bomanum regni Acae, etc.; on the basis of it the first Burmese characters were cut by the press of Propaganda, a Catechism in two versions, longer and shorter, in the Burmese language (Rome 1776-85); a Treatise on the Christian Religion in confutation of the Burmese one in the form of a dialogue between a Christian and a talapoin (Rangoon 1837), the translation from Pali of the Ceremonial and the Rules of the Talapoins; the translation into Burmese of the books of Genesis, Tobit, the Gospels, the Letters of St. Paul and of Christian liturgical texts with a commentary on the Mass; a Burmese grammar and an extensive trilingual vocabulary: Latin-Portuguese-Burmese.
