THUTMOSE III AND IV. - Pharaohs of the XVIIIth dynasty, one of whom is sometimes named in order to identify with one of them the pharaoh of the oppression or of the Exodus of Israel (Ex. 1-12).
T. III (1496-1442 B.C.) was one of the most glorious pharaohs, above all for his conquests, also in Palestine and beyond as far as the Euphrates. Having freed himself from the heavy tutelage of his aunt Hatshepsut, he resumed in 1475 the march of the Egyptian armies into the East and occupied Palestine as far as Lebanon. In 19 further consecutive campaigns he consolidated his power throughout the East. He also extended his frontiers in the direction of Nubia, reaching as far as the 4th cataract. His annals, written on a wall of the enclosure of Karnak, at Thebes, are famous.
T. IV (1416-1468), son of Amenophis II, the son of the preceding, secured by numerous wars the conquests of the latter, Palestine included, but died at only 25 years of age. He later ordered, following a dream, that the sphinx be freed from the invasion of the sands. His identification with the pharaoh of the Exodus is even less probable than for T. III.
