TRIBUNA. - In the early Christian basilicas this was the name given to the part behind the high altar in which the bishop or the abbot took his place, in the midst of the priests or the monks during ceremonies: the name derives from the analogy with the tribunal of the civil basilicas.
Around the 8th century this space was raised to allow for the development of the crypt beneath and, still for the same purpose, extended outward and terminated with a rectangular or curved body; it is thus used in the sense of apse (v.) and also in those of choir (v.) and presbytery (v.). Sometimes this name is also given to small loggias set into the wall and to the matronea themselves.
