WENCESLAUS IV, Emperor. - King of Bohemia and of Germany, b. at Nuremberg on 26 Feb. 1361, d. at Prague on 9 Aug. 1419.
Despite his young age, his father, the emperor Charles IV, succeeded in securing the succession for him; the election took place on 10 June 1376 at Frankfurt and the coronation at Aachen on 21 July. Only the imperial consecration was lacking, and Charles IV urged it, but without formulating any request for approval, to which the Holy See attached great importance and which was contrary to the Golden Bull. Gregory XI wished to exact solemn promises in favor of the Roman Church, and Charles IV made them, but with a subterfuge, that is, without the consent of the electoral College. Gregory did not allow himself to be deceived by this procedure and delayed sending a favorable reply, which then death prevented him from formulating. Urban VI, on 26 July 1377, gave satisfaction to V., in the hope of winning him over to his obedience; but he had to realize bitterly that the King of the Romans was pursuing an equivocal policy and refused to intervene in his favor with arms. The prince electors, discontented with this manner of proceeding, deposed him on 20 Aug. 1400 and on the 21st replaced him with Rupert, count palatine.
